The monsoon winds that blow across the Indian Ocean allowed contact between Persia, Arabia, India and the coast of East Africa for over 2000 years. The first European arrivals were Portuguese 'navigators' looking for a trade route with India. They reached Zanzibar at the end of the 15th Century and established a trading station here and other points on the East African coast.
The Island now features over 30 pristine beaches with many hotels that offer accommodation ranging from standard to luxury. There are remains and ruins of the Arabs all over the island including palaces, persian baths and the historic Prison Island.
The histroy plays a huge role in Zanizbar's tourism. There are many activities that will allow you to experience the history such as viewing the ruins, touring the famous Stone town and various spice tours. As there are so many fine beaches, there is a huge variety of watersports offered in Zanzibar. The best beaches can be found on the North Coast and the East Coast.
